I was literally going to post the exact same thing.
The acronym HUD starts with H(pronounced Aich), which is a consonant sound.

As for the topic, I'm not sure what you're requesting an HUD for.

Normally I expand abbreviations as I come to them in text.
So I don't say hud, or aych you dee, I say heads up display.
In which case it's still an 'a' and not an 'an'.

id suggest using gui controls if you don't. Have images and if you do then i'd use a guicontrol as container and then overlay other invisible gui controls over top of it if you want any kind of interaction. Never really been a fan of the showimg approach but that's just a personal preference. I

I say HUD, too, or usually expand abbreviations out as Demisis said. My point was that MattKan is being an douche.

If you mean the default HUD (state/status) there's a function for that.

Syntax: setstatusimage(image)

image - Name of new state image.

Example:
