Voiceovers in Graal

I'm somewhat curious why some servers probably more focused upon RPG style servers haven't taken advantage of this sort of feature we've seen in many classical games we've all played. I know there's the obvious answer of "We just don't feel like it." But I can bet there are certainly a lot of unique people and voices even. We hear sounds and such in things such as toys and NPC's and sometimes sound brings those to life. Maybe utilizing sounds in other places like say a big quest or dialogue even. Feel free to give me your opinions and reasons I just thought it'd be interesting to discuss.

we'd have people recording from cheap mics, poor voice acting, and a lot of other things which would destroy any atmosphere created with voice overs.

Than clearly you shouldn't use them. But there are some people who actually do have okay microphones, besides seriously if you expect to try to tell me theres a standard of professionalism than you clearly haven't been playing the same Graal I have. I'm asking those who do have said qualifications why not take advantage of it?

would be a nightmare

most of us have sounds off anyway

True. But usually it's because of all the obnoxious noises of sword slashes and bombs and arrows that sound like you're dead next to the arrow/bomb/sword while it's being swung shot or placed and or in mid explosion while you're in 3rd person view (I really wonder who thought that was a good idea..). But hey you got the choice of how you could use that idea. I mean I'm not saying voices could be just thrown in and instantly the game is better. This isn't a salt on your spaghetti type solution. It's just an option I've seen untouched.

To a degree I agree with you chocobo but seriously, If you ever talked to some of the people you'd hear voices of all kinds. Good example being Animation (Cartoons or however you prefer to have it called) can have awesome artwork but can be totally ruined by the fact that teenage boy in said example cartoon sounds like they just got kicked in the nads.

Are you guys really trying to say that giving sounds more spotlight in the game than just items has no positive use in Graal for a server?

Voiceovers are only really effective in RPGs, and online RPGs always suck. Voiceovers have no place on classic servers, and no offense, but I'd rather not put my ears at the mercy of those of you who fancy yourselves amateur voice actors.

And I'm sure most of the scripts you'd be reading from will suck too.

ff7chocoboknight 10-18-2010 05:50 AM

If the characters actually looked like people it'd be less wierd.

Ho man.. That's a good point. Scripts would be pretty bad from current servers we've got considering and I try not to be offensive on this but every server has the IQ on average of about 55 and that's on a good day.

That's also true.. if you did it with cinematic ganis chances are it would get pretty messy, and if you did it like chrono trigger with the dialogue boxes it would probably get a little creepy after a while.

I vote 'yay' only because maybe it will give one more person the chance to proofread and also because I have my sound off anyways.

It'd be better if you just stopped posting, srsly.

It would probably be fun to make but I don't think it would be fun to play ;).

But regardless wouldn't there be technicalities?
For reasonable/decent sound quality you'd probably need fairly large sound files, would you have these all downloaded on login with a potentially massive waiting time?, have them downloaded when required causing the sound to turn out delayed?, upload them to a website and stream them at the risk of the website going down and the sounds not working at all?

I'm against the idea of voiceovers because I'm afraid that at one point, something you've typed up will be read aloud.

Yeah, and what if it was a message you did NOT want to send but you read it aloud whilst typing it. No one wants that. Q.Q
