'Spring' Tileset

I logged on a different account earlier to show off my GC prizes and was presented with this.

Attachment 47650 Attachment 47651

Oh come on, what the hell is it supposed to be? Seasonal? It's like logging onto a completely different (and completely hideous) new world. This shows up for new players by default too? No wonder we don't get any of them. Worst tileset I've seen since Gothic Vampire Times.

weeway 03-11-2009 04:51 PM

I actually acree poo green grass?BLUE trees wth???

BlackSolider 03-11-2009 04:59 PM

Yeah...its ghetto.

Besides, it's pretty...ok I don't know if there's a word for this. But you're essentially disrespecting people who live in the southern hemisphere, since their seasons are opposite.

Ok on second thought...I doubt we have anyone who plays from the southern hem.

Point is, it is ugly.

maximus_asinus 03-11-2009 05:06 PM

It reminded me of the Dark World from LTTP the first time I seen them.

Haha I see the resemblance. This tileset looks much more alien than the Dark World did though.

maximus_asinus 03-11-2009 05:19 PM

I agree, it looks like one of the after effects if using the outdated 'setbackpal' command.

Crono 03-11-2009 05:28 PM

Did someone slap an ugly backpal onto the overworld?

Kill 03-11-2009 09:46 PM

Honestly reminds me of puke.

grim_squeaker_x 03-11-2009 09:55 PM

the grass should be a color that resembles more to the original graal tileset. I dislike the seasons. winter and summer is enough. fall and spring is too much since it just looks weird.

Remonq 03-11-2009 10:59 PM

if you guys really don't like it then turn it off

Ya but this is the default for new players. They may not know how to turn it off. They just see ugly and leave. Stop trying to justify bull**** lol

The issue that people have with the tileset isn't undone by the ability to change it yourself, and that is a copout of an excuse. As Princess Jade already mentioned, the seasonal tileset is what all new players (and old players that haven't logged on for a while) will see as soon as they log on; it's their first point of contact and it reflects the server at current. Can you imagine bizarro Classic actually leaving a good first impression on anyone? I can't, because it is vile.

Just because you may discover the ability to change it later on does not mean that it is at an acceptable standard of quality to actually be on the server either. The ability to change tilesets on the actual server is pretty debatable in itself, but if we're going to have seasonal tilesets then the development staff should actually put effort into it and make them look nice. It isn't hard to make something look nicer than that tileset, but then again it's not even necessary, nor do the default tilesets look out of place in a Spring season.

Yeah you're right, it would probably make the levels look so much better. Doubt it would go down well with the parroting nostalgia 'elitists' though.. or the rest of the server quality.

Luda 03-12-2009 04:29 AM

Tom's sand tiles pls

Seems so but its true that it looked better without the seasonal stuff added.

Remonq 03-12-2009 10:07 AM

so it seems. turn it off. and as for the newbies, maybe dev should make it more well known that it can be turned off in options

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2009 10:31 AM

I prefer the original tileset with just one color for the grass. :P

MiniOne 03-12-2009 10:58 AM

There's a option to switch it off?

grim_squeaker_x 03-12-2009 12:14 PM

Yes

Remonq 03-12-2009 01:52 PM

it's an NPC in your Q inventory

weeway 03-12-2009 04:26 PM

Ranger we know that but really it's ugly and noobs, not all of them are to smart it's easyer to remove it then to scare 5 people away with it's ugly colours

Personally, I have no problem with Classic using that tileset. For those who complain, they can switch to another tileset via the system already in place.

HOWEVER, I do not support the idea of multiple tilesets being used, I have no idea why this was allowed. In my tiles folder there are five different tilesets belonging to classic. Each tileset has different flaws with different tiles. It makes it incredibly difficult for a LAT to create a level that works with every tileset. Classic should focus on using one tileset. If we started using Bomy Island's tileset then it should become the default version, and all others should be removed.

As a side note I would also like to point out that if Classic was to use the tileset that we should get Koni's permission to first, because he created it for Bomy Islands. You may argue that as Bomy Islands manager you can dictate how the tileset is used, or that "everything uploaded to Graal Online is property of Graal Online" so we wouldn't need permission anyway, but I'm not sure everyone would accept this, especially if Koni returned and made a fuss. It would be best to play it on the safe side, get approval.

Remonq 03-12-2009 10:57 PM

i agree with max on the part of using one tileset. i don't agree with using bomy island's tileset tho

ff7chocoboknight2 03-13-2009 01:25 AM

The tileset looks nice in Swamp Town and Destiny...

BlackSolider 03-13-2009 03:21 AM

But who goes there consistently?
