30-second wait for searching

Please remove the 30-second wait limit on searching (atleast when registered members search) ... it's extremely annoying when you're trying to find something.

I was trying to find the encryption example Skyld gave a while ago, and it took about an hour to find because I couldn't get the term he used. And I had to wait 30 seconds between each search.

Please remove this, atleast for registered members! It's not like any paying costumer will spam searches, and if they do, suspend/infracture/ban them?

Thanks!

TSAdmin 01-24-2008 02:11 AM

It's not there to piss people off, it's there to limit the strain it puts on retrieving the information you requested that matches things on the entire forums.

I know it's not there to urinate ( ;) ) me off, but it can't be doing that much. It's not like there'd be much of a noticeable increase in strain on the server if it was removed. I can see if removed for everyone (including guests), but not for members.

bscharff 01-24-2008 02:28 AM

The only reason forum scripters added the time limit is to prevent server overloading.

Members will not overload it (If they do then as Chris said, bant :) ).

Maybe set it to 15 seconds?

DustyPorViva 01-24-2008 02:31 AM

It can easily overload it. Think of the huge amount of activity on these forums, can you imagine all those people doing searches at the same time???

I think you mean Administrators (Unixmad, Stefan), as us lowly scripters can do no such thing.

But there isn't that much activity, and most people just look at new posts; not search all the time. I think the only people who really search a lot would be scripters, but of course I could be wrong.

I'd like to hear Stefan or Unixmad or Darlene post, I assume it wouldn't make a huge overload, but I don't know for sure.

So you caught on.

When I said (or wrote/typed) "forum scripters" I meant the makers of vBulletin. :P

The effect it has on the forums depends on the size of the database. Since we have 1.2 million posts stored, 30 seconds is just fine. I cant see any problem with it, either. Just play Tetris while waiting ;P

When I think of it, maybe Stefan/Unix could install the arcade addon for the forum?

cbk1994 01-25-2008 02:06 AM

If it won't cause a problem, why have it?

It's really annoying when you have to find something ...

Angel_Light 01-25-2008 02:41 AM

It is there for a reason, to prevent overflow of traffic, i saves bandwidth.

Horrified 01-25-2008 02:46 AM

How did you guys miss Dusty's sarcasm? You can easily tell from the three question marks how not serious he was!!!

Someone once said (or I may be paraphrasing)

"This forum was gifted with a few things; the ability to understand sarcasm is not one of them"

Though, if you are doing like 5 searches in 20 seconds, that on a DB that contains 1.2 million posts..have fun with the overloading.

cbk1994 02-21-2008 11:51 PM

Bump

DustyPorViva 02-22-2008 12:13 AM

I visit other forums(that have a lot more activity and threads) and they just lowered it to 10 seconds. It's godsend.

www.google.com

30-second wait for searching site:forums.graalonline.com

DustyPorViva 02-22-2008 12:31 AM

I don't get what you're trying to say?
That because google has a wait limit it's fine to have one?

Nope, he means that you open google.com

and write this in: "site:forums.graalonline.com <keywords>"

for example:

DustyPorViva 02-22-2008 12:43 AM

Oh, he meant do a google search on it...
Okay, still not following?

Oh, and you posted a link, Vulcan. Please go directly to jail. Do not collect money on passing GO.

You don't have to use the forum's search feature when you have Google!

DustyPorViva 02-22-2008 09:14 AM

Heh, what a lame excuse.

omigod ur so kool.

If we can do this, disable search completely, Vulcan clearly believes it is inferior to the awesome searching capabilities that is Google.

xXziroXx 02-22-2008 01:06 PM

According too vBulletin staff, the "strain" put on the server when searching is close to null, and would only be noticeable if youre hosting the forum on a server from the late 90's.

I doubt thats the case here, so just remove the search limit or put it to 5 seconds to prevent bots from having fun, please?

cbk1994 03-27-2008 05:32 AM

cbk1994 05-04-2008 03:09 AM

Any comment from the admins and moderators?

kia345 05-04-2008 03:13 AM

It's safe to say no one gives a damn.

Which is sad, seeing as there's no real drawback to shortening the wait.

Unfortunately, it would seem so.

It's quite annoying to have to wait 30 seconds to find something, then needing to try a different keyword, etc.

cbk1994 05-24-2008 04:00 PM

Any progress?

kia345 05-24-2008 04:02 PM

They won't make money, no.

cbk1994 05-27-2008 05:20 AM

???

Elizabeth 05-27-2008 08:30 PM

i dislike the thirty second wait.
it should be five-ten second wait

cbk1994 06-04-2008 08:58 PM

Hammatime?

kia345 06-08-2008 07:00 PM

Bump for searching, I accidently ran into this whilst searching for something completely different, and have to wait half a minute to search again.

Proof of concept ;o

cbk1994 06-13-2008 02:15 AM

Me and Chris agree on this, it must be good.
