The Bombermad Server: Rough Draft

Did you ever play any of the Bomberman games? Specifically Bomberman 64 for the Nintendo 64? What about Bombermad on the Graal games world?

Well guess what gamers and developers, a new server will begin production sometime in the future: The Bombermad Server!

This idea is very much in its infancy so many ideas will most likely be considered but here is the basic run down so far:
  • The theme of the server is a classic server with your standard QASD key set-up. Being that it is a classic server, it will have classic like quests for obtaining new items and such.
  • Unlike other classic servers and much like Bomberman though, when you get hit by a bomb, you are gone in 1 hit. There are no "hitpoints" so to speak (but there may be a heart item you can hold for protection).
  • In keeping with the Bomberman theme, you will be able to get power-ups for your bombs such as stronger firepower and being able to have more bombs on the ground. You also will be able to have different kinds of bombs such as the remote bomb and the super bomb. New bombs types will also be developed such as the steel bomb or the scatter bomb. All of these power-ups would be quest rewards much like fullhearts are given as rewards on other servers.
  • Bombs may or may/not be your typical 4 directional fire breath type. In fact regardless of if we have those or not, many other types will also be included such as your standard circular bomb (which was the kind you would see in the N64 game) or possibly a bomb that shoots in random directions.
  • Bombs aren't just about exploding the other person. You can kick them, pick them up, pump them bigger (for a bigger explosion!), throw them and punch them! Other ways to play with the bombs will come too.
  • Because the server is a classic theme, players will be blowing each other up not on singular maps like you see in Bombermad but instead will be able to explore vast gmaps. Terrain obstacles might be implemented too such as stairs and ledges to give you the "drop" on the enemy.

That's the basic idea plot for the server mechanics. Here is some of the more original and thought out ideas:
  • Quests will give more then just bomb upgrades. Much like the N64 version, this server will have "suit pieces" that you can get as rewards for really difficult quests. Each full suit will contain a head piece, a body piece, an arms piece and a legs piece. Currently it's planned that having a full suit equipped won't give any benefit but that is not set in stone.
  • Equipping any suit piece will grant you some sort of ability. One example would be the sword/shield which would allow you do to a simple slash attack against anyone that comes close to you (it would only make the target go dizzy). Remember all those cool abilities that the sub-bosses and bosses had in the N64 version? Well now you can have those!
  • This server might be used as a bridge between Graal 2D and Graal 3D by using some of the Graal 3D technology to display the players, items, enemies and objects as 3D shapes. This would all be displayed on a 2D world (with possible 3D illusions) but would be made to fit it nicely. Essentially the server would become 3D but wouldn't actually be running on the Graal3D engine save for the use of 3D object files. This means there won't be any dynamic camera changes or the like: The perspective will still be kept just like a 2D server.
  • The world will be divided up into various floating islands in space. Each island will have its own theme as well as it's own set of rewards in the quests that they hold.

Here is a sample list of the 4 starting islands and the suit pieces you can get from each one:
  • Green Island: The Grassy Plains
This land is very peaceful and calm but is also the home to some ancient ruins. What lies in the depths of these ruins? Legends speak of a fire breathing beast and the local castle seems to have taken quite an interest...
    Suit Pieces:
    • Knight's Helmet - This helmet has a chance of protecting you from getting dizzy when being hit by a thrown bomb. The helmet has a visor and is commonly found on Dragon Slayers.
    • Breast Plate - This chest armor can protect against various other attacks such as those by a sword. This is a standard issue set of armor to all new recruit knights but is sturdy none-the-less.
    • Sword and Shield - The sword can be used to attack other enemies in an attempt to knock them out or at least knock them back. The shield serves as protection against other swords. Both were mysteriously discovered together in the ruins and were rewarded to one who proved his honor. Their true power is still unknown.
    • Knight's Boots - Knight's boots are durable and thus allow the wearer to kick the more heavier types of bombs if he has that ability. They also seem to make you sink in water. These were owned by an old knight but why would someone wear something so heavy?
  • Blue Island: The Great Sea
This island actually appears from afar as just a giant bowl of water. It is the home to many marine creatures but it seems something is polluting the water. Recently some Dragoons have appeared in attempts to purify the place once more.
    Suit Pieces:
    • Dragon Head - This "helmet" will allow the wearer to breath fire! Such an item is usually only found among the most elite of Dragoons.
    • Dragon Mail - This set of chest armor will allow you to glide when worn. Such a tactic is common by Dragoons and thus this chest mail is standard for all troops.
    • Dragon Gloves - The dragon gloves will let you pump your bombs up a little faster. Such an item is usually rewarded to Dragoons that prove their ability on the battle field.
    • Dragon Spikes - Boots like these are heat resistant and will protect you against really hot floors. They are usually only given to special missions in certain places but are pretty unnecessary for this island.
  • Red Island: The Ravaged Lands
This island is covered in lava! Inside some of the volcanoes is a great source of power. Someone appears to have found this power and is manufacturing some special synthetic metal which is supposedly unbreakable. Can anyone stop them?
    Suit Pieces:
    • Iron Goggles - Iron goggles are really a computerized system. They let you see things you normally could not.
    • Iron Armor - This armor is equipped with a jet-pack which allows you to fly for short intervals! How fun is that?
    • Iron Knuckles - With these on, you can break many things without the use of a bomb. Equip them with the Dragon Mail and you will look like a famous console game character!
    • Iron Sneakers - While these appear to be a very pointless heavy set of shoes, they are in fact just the opposite. With these donned, you won't slide on slippery surfaces that much at all but at the same time won't be hindered by the illusionary weight.
  • White Island: The Snowy Mountain
This large hunk of rock, ice and snow is a play ground for many small critters. Explore around a bit and you may even find a little family of cats to play with. But something seems to be troubling them.
    Suit Pieces:
    • Cat Hood - Purr like a cat. What could these possibly be for?
    • Cat Suit - With a cute little tail and a little bell too! Is this whole set just for making you look cute?
    • Cat Paws (Arms) - Unlike the last two items, these specific cat paws will let you climb many surfaces. You also walk like a cat when wearing them.
    • Cat Paws (Legs) - These paws also serve to be useful as they will let you dodge many projectiles automatically as if you had cat senses.

This list is completely preliminary and is totally open for change.

As for the progress:
Because this server is completely in the idea stage and because I wish to finish my current project, Atexia, first, nothing physically has been done yet nor will for a little while. The main purpose of this thread is to throw the idea out there for discussion to help me build the design document.
This idea is not up for grabs!
So don't even think about stealing it.

I also am using my server for Atexia right now so I don't even have the space to develop this yet so keep that all in mind please.

Now if anyone has any questions, suggestions, comments or concerns, you may post them now.

Hope you like it!

EDIT:
Also some names have been thrown around mainly "Bombermad Advanced" and "Bombermad Evolved". I'll start a poll in my next thread with the various names that people suggest so start suggesting!

Let me repeat: This is not a mini-games server!
Although mini-games may be possible for events.

Err, never mind that...

Yeah, cool man =D

I was going to say "Why an extra fire power power-up if you only have 1 hit point?" but then I remember you can destroy rocks and stuff aswell, which may have varying strength.

zokemon 08-07-2007 03:52 PM

Extra fire power means bigger explosions ;)

Shakram 08-07-2007 06:10 PM

ehm omg lol
you are using bomberman ideas
and we are not allowed to do the same ?
rofl
and its always the same next i will list 100 pages of ideas so nobody is ever be allowed to do a good server because the ideas will be "stolen" lol

i have nothing against a bomberman server but pls dont let it look like its your idea

Curt1zzle 08-07-2007 06:13 PM

try & make another server plz

xXziroXx 08-07-2007 06:42 PM

Oh please, I'd prefer dusting off my N64 and play the REAL Bomberman instead . Sorry Zero, you fail this time.

I never said you can't use bomberman ideas. I said you can't take my ideas and just use all of them. Anyone is allowed to make their own server but if it was a server that was exactly like the one posted here, that would obviously be stealing.

Pimmeh 08-08-2007 12:22 AM

I think that is legal...I asked a PWA about that once.

Nevertheless... Nicely thought out, sounds fun to play for 10 minutes a day but not for 10000 hours like I saw someone have on classic

There would be lots of quests and it would be a classic theme (not a mini-games type theme) which is why I said the "maps" wouldn't be little single levels but rather would be huge gmaps that you could explore. You only would play that for 10 minutes a day? You would like never finish a quest! xD

DustyPorViva 08-08-2007 12:26 AM

What's the big deal? Graal took every idea from Zelda. And I believe Bombermad was also a game CJ created that 'grew up' alongside Graal, just Graal happened to be more 'successful'. I think it's more like reviving something that CJ already had, so blame CJ, not him for using the ideas.

I'd like to know who else thought of doing a bomberman playerworld.

DustyPorViva 08-08-2007 02:54 AM

I don't think he ever said it was his idea, but the fact that he's going to attempt the idea. Which means, after he posted that there's no reason to see bomberman servers start to pop up. Just like Era isn't an original idea, people still claim Era clones since it was the first modern server up.

smirt362 08-08-2007 03:18 AM

Didn't I talk to you about making a Bomberman server?

Either way, yours sounds cooler.

Oh..and that other bomberman game on the N64...Bomberman: Second Attack or whatever, had elemental bombs which I think should be in there as well.

UberModeKappa 08-08-2007 04:01 AM

Make it in 3d please.

Really? I don't remember ever even thinking about a Bomberman server before now o_o. It is entirely possible though but I'm sorry I forgot if you did x_x.

That's a great idea. I'll add that to the list of bomb types.

In the next thread I should be posting sample screen shots (to show what I am going for as a picture is worth a thousand words), a more comprehensive list of bombs types, power-ups and better suit piece descriptions. I will also post possible idea quests (but only a few, I don't want to spoil anything ;D).

Updated first post for those that are to lazy to read.

(Oops, forgot I posted 10 minutes ago, sorry for double post.)

Twinny 08-08-2007 05:56 AM

The first test should be a multiplayer lobby. You can let players test the mechanics of the server whilst blowing the **** out of each other. Leave it there while you develop a test island or whatever.

zokemon 08-08-2007 07:29 AM

Good news!

I have set up Gileada (staff-only, sorry) to work with both Atexia and Bombermad without conflicting with each other (using a nifty start screen). I should be able to set up a multi-player test through this for players to try out like Twinny said.

Screen shot of the key layout! Keep in mind I only used state.png and the current Bombermad graphics. I have to remind you that I currently have no graphic artists for either of my projects, Atexia or Bombermad. Help would greatly be appreciated.

The keys are as follows:
  • S - Bomb Key
    • Drop a fresh bomb under you.
    • Pump up a bomb in your hands.
    • Create a fresh bomb in your hands while holding A.
  • Z - Trigger Key
    • Trigger a remote bomb to explode.
    • Do other secondary bomb related functions (depending the bomb equipped).
  • A - Arms Key
    • Pick up a bomb, item or dizzy enemy.
    • Throw what is being held.
    • Grab and Pull.
    • Create a fresh bomb in hands when S is pressed while held down.
    • Use equipped arms suit piece such as swinging the sword or holding up the shield.
  • E - Head Key
    • Use equipped head suit piece such as breathing fire (Dragon Helm) or turning on special vision (Iron Goggles).
  • D - Body Key
    • Use equipped body suit piece such as gliding (Dragon Mail) or hovering (Iron Armor).
  • C - Legs Key
    • Kick a bomb in front of you.
    • Use equipped legs suit piece such as running.
  • Q - Power-Up Menu
    • Displays all acquired power-ups and miscellaneous items.
    • Equip various bombs acquired and triggers for them too (like remote bomb).
    • View quest status.
  • W - Suit Piece Menu
    • Displays all acquired and equipped suit pieces.
    • Equip suit pieces on your head, body, arms and legs for various abilities.
  • M - Map (Not shown on screen shot)
    • Shows 3 types of maps (if acquired).
    • Local Map - Displays the general vicinity around you along with possible other features such as items, bombs and enemies. This can only be used if you have vision type equipment worn such as the Iron Goggles.
    • Island Map - Displays the whole island that you are on. Includes various geographical features and other points of interest. Requires a whole island map or pieces of an island map.
    • Space Map - Displays all the known islands to you along with information about each one. Though you start the game with this, it builds it self bigger as you find more islands.

That is just my general rough draft for the key set-up. Comments?

SayianOozaru 08-09-2007 12:06 AM

I've actually never played Bombermad or w/e, except for that one server that had it on here...

I couldn't understand it, but I liked it. ^^

Hopefully this will turn out to be just as fun. :)

Chompy 08-09-2007 12:20 AM

Pretty nice Zero, I like it :) Especially the part with head, body, legs and all the stuff part :D

Iron Googles and Dragon Helmet :p

Yeah, one thing I always wanted in that game was to have those suit pieces actually have a use.

MysticalDragon 08-09-2007 04:12 AM

I love this idea. Look at Giledia, if anyone can do it, your defently the guy. I wish you the best of luck and I can't wait to play/Dev on it.

Here is a screen shot of what we've got so far. As you can see I'm using the ugly classic bodies temporarily and also am using pics1...

We really would like some help in the graphics department. At least for making some tiles!

MysticalDragon 08-10-2007 08:38 PM

Zero, to be honest I'm surprised your not apart of the GST Team.Your defenetly capable of being a good edition to there team. And that looks awesome (Bomber mad) by the way.

I'd much rather work on a few different projects and be actually part of it rather than do the work GST does. Mind you, I'm not a scripter nor ever been part of any global staff team so I wouldn't know.

Well the work zero does already consist of what the GST does, right? He has great ideas with an amazing imagination and he also helps other playerworlds that are in need of some assistance. GST Doesn't only work on gold/Graal Managed Playerworlds. From what I've experienced in the past GST does work on multiple jobs all around graal and helps reduce lag from servers that experience heavy lag from poor scripting. So therefore I think Zero would be a good, no great edition to the team.

But I believe this thread is about Bombermad and I'm sorry for taking it off track. Good luck zero and I hope you get some talented graphic artist to put those Scripts to use and stop making those GFXs sit there and looking pretty.*Inverness* <3 Still didn't forget about you.

Twinny 08-11-2007 01:26 AM

I'm on hold while we wait for graphics. Need a tileset to make some cool levels and my lobby system needs some levels to test out it's functionality. Still, it's fun to blow the ever-loving crap out of people :D

Ok ok I'm just lazy. Sheesh.

Also:
I'm allowing some people to test out both Atexia and Bombermad on a person-to-person basis. Just send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

Neat idea. :)

This sounds like an interesting project, good luck with it zero.
