A 3D cathedral kind of thing.

Yeah, so i am hoping i can find a method of covnerting 3ds max files into graal 3d files. Theres a way, i used to know it. Anyways, enjoy, these are screenshots of quick renders during the process of modelling. Should be interesting to any 3d artists to see the steps of how a 3d building is made. Questions, comments, critique (especially) and ideas very fondly welcomed.

Kind of looks like an aqueduct bridge. Neat!

Thanks. I'll post more images soon, but as for the aquaduct-ness, not for long. It will hopefully resemble a glorious building such as the beautiful cathedrals scattered around Europe.

Elk 06-23-2006 05:44 PM

With what program do you do that? ^^

I see someone has had fun with watermarking.

Tom 06-24-2006 01:58 AM

Nice work there mate, keep working on it and it will very slowly get a better form, its a time consuming thing :)

And elk, its only complicated to an idiot such as yourself :)

[Only post for the next 8 hours, worth it]

Bl0nkt 06-24-2006 02:03 AM

Better than most models I see. How long it take you?

moving on. I wasnt too happy about the arches having 7 lines, too low poly, so i am rounding them off. in order to do this i have to create an object to fit in the cut i took out, thus filling it, then i have to create an ellipse and substract it from the objects. You'll see what i mean.

Little fact :
You may notice older games having less lines in their shapes. The less lines these shapes have, the less poly count it has. Older games have a lower polycount because systems weren't powerful enough to render. The more polygons a shape has, needless to say the smoother it is.
With new graphics cards MB size doubling approximately every 18 months, graphics are becoming more and more amazing, with the release of xbox 360 and such spearheading the popularity of them. Needless to say, the need for detail is substantial now, so whether your starting out or are a pro graphics artist, on order to survive, you have to work with detail.

the language at the top is in welsh, it sounds a lot like elvish, but it says "Beginning of the tower" as i shall log this forum thread for my As Design and technology work. Comes in handy :-)

That looks very nice. Loving the big arch. :D

Draenin 06-30-2006 04:43 PM

Ah, wait, are you doing this from the inside-out?

Redwizard 07-04-2006 11:22 AM

outside in. I am using boolean to substract any materials inside the cathedral so i can replace them without having any nasty bsp cuts. Also my hard drive has kicked the old bucket over the past 3 - 4 days, so forgive my absence. I've invested in a larger hard drive (355gb) so i should be back up and running tonight. Im posting from a schools computer at the moment, and the forums dont seem to work on my fathers pc in the house.. any ways i could solve this you think? Either ways ive backed everything up (luckily) and shall post an update shortly.

Zideruic 07-05-2006 04:31 AM

what browser does your dad use?

Redwizard 07-05-2006 11:13 AM

Internet Explorer.. but so does the schools. I wanna get him to use firefox but he isnt having any of it. he is basically a grade A.. erm... you can slot in the next word, if you want. Hard drive came. Its good.. but i need a different primary, because my 122gb maxtor doesnt boot up as a primary, so ive had to set it to slave, and i have an 8gb primary, so its extremely slow..

Draenin 07-06-2006 12:10 AM

Are you getting those numbers from how much you have remaining after Windows takes off a chunk?

lancelot9 07-06-2006 01:10 AM

I hope i can see it finished and skinned

looks real good

:-) *small* update. Thanks galdor. havent seen you in a long time <3
Corners of the towers are incomplete. so where there isa horrid gap making the shape seem like a badly constructed corner, there will be more pillars and cool bits.

Zero Hour 07-07-2006 02:28 AM

That looks pretty hot, Red. Although I'm afraid the arch on the main entrance doesn't suit the theme.

Redwizard 07-07-2006 02:49 AM

its a rough outline, i agree with you that it looks out of place right now..more than likely down to the fact that its probably too round, so i will be looking into that later on. I shall detail and finish the arch part as soon as i nail the style of the rest of the building first. I may make an entry to that Architectural Wonders II contest, though i stand little chance.
What must also be taken into cosnideration is that there is a gap of 180 units from the floor to the beginning on the arch; this is where i intend on modelling pillars and complex diverse walls to support the arch. So its not on the same level as the rest of the building, may be a reason why it looks out of place also. There are many many errors here, but its all gravy, its ocming along nicely.

adam 07-07-2006 04:16 PM

Your amazing.

Great work.

!? AMAZING.
I really like it. :applaud:

killerogue 07-08-2006 04:31 AM

Moondeath_2 07-08-2006 06:14 AM

Wow this is amazing. How ever I wish I could download the program you used, wouldn't take me long to figure out out but I belive it costs a quite a bit of money.
