Starting up some contest

Ok, well, I'm bored, and this here forum needs some good activity. So I'm thinking I should start some kind of simple contest. I'll probably do something simple like rendering rope, including several objectives to require for different levels of experience. If anyone is interested in helping me judge or just thinks this is a neat idea, forum pm me or post here. I need to get the details worked out on how to hold this contest (keep entrants private until the end or just have them be posted, and stuff like that). So any comment of that nature is appreciated. Heck, if this goes over well, I may (or someone else may) just start doing these more often. :eek:

GoZelda 08-30-2004 09:44 PM

I'll judge it.

Nappa 08-30-2004 10:05 PM

I think you need to know how to script to judge a scripting contest x_X

VeX_RaT_Boy 08-30-2004 11:04 PM

I do not think you know Cyrin, because he CAN script...

Anyways, neat idea.

ZeroTrack 08-31-2004 01:40 PM

I'll help judge

osrs 08-31-2004 06:35 PM

I want to participate of the contests. :)

calum 08-31-2004 07:34 PM

/ME wants to judge the contest!

Dach 08-31-2004 09:53 PM

Hmm, I suppose four judges should be enough. I think we should do an olympic style judging (since it's the simplest) where we all judge each participant and award a numerical value depending on different aspects of the script (efficiency, adhering to a single formatting style, overal quality, bonuses for special effects and good commentations, etc). I suppose it would be better to accept only private submissions to quell script stealing notions, but the forums appear to not allow attachments in pms... Maybe send it via email to all four judges? dunno, Would be nice all allow non-forum members to participate via emails or w/e
If you have any suggestions, feel free to post them.

Fry2 08-31-2004 10:14 PM

Sounds nice, who judges the judges?

Polo 09-01-2004 12:36 AM

I dont think you can really judge a scripts formatting by comparing it to a certain style, because I know that each scripter on these forums has thier own little quirks and nuances. It does not mean thier formatting is worse, just not the same. Of course, you can always judge one wther a script is formatted well in general...

not comparing, following a particular style, as in their script does not have one style here, and another there

Gambet 09-01-2004 01:22 AM

The things that matter in a script are

-That it's readable (well formatted/styled)
-That it works functionally without any flaws
-That the script is secure
-That the script doesnt contain any bugs or any possible loop holes in them

falco10291029 09-01-2004 01:50 AM

Ok how do you participate in this and you said something about different levels of scripting i would participate in the one 2nd from the top level maybe less dependoing on the amount of levels but sounds fun!

osrs 09-01-2004 01:53 AM

Shouldn't the GST guys be the judges? I can't see others good options.

I agree with this. The Global Scripting Team would be the best judges, since its there division which they do very well.

falco10291029 09-01-2004 02:36 AM

sure just ignore me :'(

you should have said something earlier.. and don't make me join something just to judge me own contest :(, nah, actually if you and the others want, you can judge (might need to simply replace some current guys to keep it nice and simple :\ ) If the selection of judges is agreeable to it, we could form some kind of "commitee" to hold contests like these on more of a regular basis. Fun no?

falco10291029: I'll make a post with the finalized rules when we're ready to accept applicants. You'll probably be sending a forum PM to all of the judges (acct1;acct2;and so on in the send to box) with your code (code tags, or I'll hit you) or just send us an email if you have to use images or don't have access to the forums. There will be different application levels, and each level will be treated separately (save for odd cases).

Well at any rate, we can use this contest as an experiment to see how these things should be done. It should be fun!

falco10291029 09-01-2004 03:20 AM

ok thx and such

I have just left a comment, don't worry. >_<
I just hope you don't choose some dumb people that can't even use their brains but still wants to judge something.

ZeroTrack 09-01-2004 07:30 PM

IM JUDGEING!! =D MuHAHAHAHA im a hard ass =p

I was just messing with ya. heh, Maybe I should test those wanting to be judges with some test script to see how well they do. ^^
Well, actually I'm getting tired of postponing this, so I'll start it now.

This will be a specific contest in that there will be only one type of script accepted. There are options for different skill levels just to be more fair-ish. Anyway, here are the details;
You must create a script to render a rope or string type object. You can use showpoly, showtext, showimages, and all that kind of stuff however you like, aslong as the script does actually render a rope-like object.

Beginning scripters need to just figure out a way to create, draw and drag the object.

Intermediate scripters need to emulate inertia in the rope to simulate whip-like effects.

Advanced entrants must incorporate the option for multiple weights attatched to the rope (affecting the inertia and movement of the rope).

Extra functions and visuals can be added and depending on niftyness and efficiency of code, shall help to add cool points to your script. The methods you use to render, and operate the rope is up to you, be creative!

As of yet, I'm thinking I should accept entries for the duration of a week. So send the script via PM to Dach;GoZelda;ZeroTrack;calum (<- put that in the send to box) and USE CODE TAGS!! (I would prefer you using [ php] since it has the fewest obnoxious extra spaces). If your script won't fit within one PM or you do not have forum access, send me an e-mail @ [email protected] I will send it to the other judges via PM or email (if they will allow the scripts to be sent to their e-mail). We won't accept any more entries after Wednesday, September 8 (unless extreme circumstances occur). We will try to have the results back soon thereafter.

Note: I will be out of town this weekend (yes, very bad timing on my part...) so please try to not rely on me sending your application to the other judges at that time. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but I am fairly confident it won't affect the judging time much.

ZeroTrack 09-01-2004 11:56 PM

test me =D PM me what you want hehe

You forgot efficiency.

falco10291029 09-02-2004 12:10 AM

Um it's gotta be a rope? Boring im not participating i thought i'd be able to make any script i wanted XD

Much easier to judge when they're all similar type scripts ;) .

falco10291029 09-02-2004 01:02 AM

That implies that your lazy you know, you should be able to judge different scripts without having them be the same kind, i actually think that would be harder since theyd do about the same thing

Gambet 09-02-2004 01:02 AM

What exactly is the prize?

Rick 09-02-2004 01:25 AM

Is this contest GScript1 only?

Uh, how efficiently a script runs is contained in the bubble 'quality of the script', but so are those other things you mentioned. It's a category, not a point to judge.

Which is what i meant. But, if it fit in the same category, then why did you mention i forgot about the efficiency of a script, when infact i didnt?

>_<

ZeroTrack 09-02-2004 01:47 AM

Its not a contest to win anything, its for fun and some people learn better when they hear and correct there mistakes , basicly just have fun with it, dont get all worked up about it and do the best you can , you'll learn a lot from this.

I don't see how me being lazy relates to this... you're just mad cause you're not participating ;)

We need less complaining and more scripting :frown:

falco10291029 09-02-2004 02:18 AM

less complaining? the day that happens on graal is the day.....something.......else thats impossible happens lol

osrs 09-02-2004 02:27 AM

Good luck anyway, Chad. I had already suggested this to Loriel once but i never started the project.

The reason is, surprisingly enough, contained within the post that you quoted.

Gambet 09-02-2004 04:05 AM

Ah, I see. I guess it's best to categorize it, makes it a bit more understandable and well, its more organized ^^.

amonrabr 09-02-2004 01:36 PM

I think its a nice idea ^^ Something like.. "the best script in 10 lines" =P or something

=)

NPC Code:
if (playerenters) {
hide;
sleep .1;
show;
sleep .1;
hide;
sleep .1;
show;
sleep .1;
}

That little contest that Hell Raven did was fun, this works too I suppose.
