POLL: How do you pronounce "Graal"?

After many years of playing this game, the question still lurks in my mind. From the early days when there was only one known server to play on, and the largest quest was to seek out the four Holy Grails (pimp-cup-looking things). And it would have only made sense to pronounce "Graal" as "Grail". But of course, after the first few months, my tongue became rather lazy, and I began pronouncing it as "Grahwl". Then it became annoying that I wasn't pronouncing it correctly, and I just referred to it as "The Game" or "That Addictive Game" for about 2 more years. Then eventually, and even today, I simply say "Grahwl" again.

So you guys and gals have heard my story, on the subject. Now, it's time to hear yours'. How do you pronounce "Graal"?

Creating an actual poll for this would be nice.

I think Googi created a thread like this times ago. I pronounce "Gra-al".

VeX_RaT_Boy 07-30-2004 06:14 PM

URBANLEGEND 07-30-2004 06:35 PM

Gray Ill

XiLe 07-30-2004 06:39 PM

I still say the originally thought pronunciation, 'Grail', as from Classic's four holy grails... 'Grahl', "Grr-awl', 'Gra-hl', and that type of pronunciation sounds sort of like something out of a Pokemon game to me... then again it's probably just my opinion ;)

Skyerus 07-30-2004 06:54 PM

Gra-al :p

TESTRETIS 07-30-2004 07:01 PM

...growl ;)

Zero Hour 07-30-2004 07:12 PM

It's Grawl. I asked Stefan, I asked god himself. For the love of all that is pure, it's Grawl.

XJOKERX 07-30-2004 07:51 PM

I pronounce it as Grail.

Sure, but that certainly does not mean that they are correct.

The 'aa' in 'Graal' forms an 'ah'/'aw' sound.

Who said it's english?

RagedWebJAL 07-30-2004 10:10 PM

But then again, it could be interperated<sp?> a few different ways. I just think that this is rather an interesting subject, seeing to it that we all play the game, but many of us do not know the actual pronounciation of the game that we're playing. At this point, I am saying that there are no "right"/"wrong" way of saying it. I just like the confirmation that I'm not alone in this matter.

Raelyn 07-30-2004 10:12 PM

I call it Grael, just like Raelyn, without the yn. :whatever:
My friends who don't even play graal pronounce it like that, my family does too. :asleep:

Thallen 07-30-2004 10:13 PM

Gr-ahl! I win.

I wouldn't trust on word alone if he said "The sky is blue.". Just like I wouldn't trust if he said "Graal 3D is done, and will be released in a week."

You would not trust the creator of a game to know how its title is pronounced...?

Neonight 07-30-2004 11:16 PM

Grail. I would not call it this, had the main Graal quest been something other than collecting "Graals" that looked suspiciously like Crayola Grails. ;P

Going on that same train of thought, do you truly believe that your name is whatever your mother and father say your name is? :)

Not on word alone. :) Trust me, in the entire 3-4 years I've been sitting here in front of this poor excuse for an MMORPG, I have realised two things, 1) no matter how lame it is people will always play it due to it's addictive nature and the fact that it targets 12 year olds who seem to have no trouble time and time again getting thier parents to pay the fee at least once. 2) Nothing anyone, players or staff, related to graal ever says is 100% truth and none of them are to be trusted as far as you can throw them.

Silver Knight 07-30-2004 11:51 PM

^ Uh-oh, watch what you say, wouldn't want to be banhammered.
On topic:
I know it's pronounced as Grahl, but I have been saying it as Grail ever since I first joined. Everytime I think/say Grahl in reference to Graal, it just doesn't feel right.

Monkeyboy_McGee 07-31-2004 12:22 AM

Heh, nice question. I pronounce it Grahl.

On another note...how do you guys pronounce "GK"? For some weird reason, inside my head i always think of it as "gee-kay", but if i say it, which i rarely do, its "jee-kay". XD

Darlene159 07-31-2004 02:01 AM

I have always pronounced it Grawl or Grahl

Nappa 07-31-2004 02:42 AM

Gra-owl or Grail.. It just comes out differently when it wants to.

sage_scooby 07-31-2004 03:04 AM

I pronounce it

Gr-awl

I still to this day don't believe it, I'm leaning towards Benjamin, but they continue to argue otherwise, until then, I will be known as Frolic.

Dach 07-31-2004 03:51 PM

I've always pronounced it Grahl. Even with the grails, I just couldn't bring myself to pronounce it against it's spelling.

calum 07-31-2004 05:13 PM

I think Stefan should record himself saying it then problem sovled!

RagedWebJAL 07-31-2004 06:19 PM

Raelyn - I wouldn't trust on word alone if he said "The sky is blue."

..Actually, the sky isn't blue. The blue appearance comes from the reflection off of the ocean/water.

But seriously, we should get back on topic.
