Actually it's a real tactic for fighting fire.
Basically you just find an open field and burn up a part of it, then just keep standing on the burned part, and you'll be able to survive the fire.

So it isn't exactly fighting it, but it sure means you can occasionally stay alive.

I think what viper did was pretty funny.

Though obviously care must be taken not to set oneself alight when performing the first step.
