Server Based off Franchises

So technically you can play Graal for free, and server developers don't make a profit. So why would making a server based off of a movie series such as Star Wars, Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, etc. not be acceptable when there is no profit being made by the maker?

Spiker 05-14-2013 10:09 PM

go for it

fowlplay4 05-14-2013 11:01 PM

If the copyright holders have an issue with the project they will send them a C&D, it doesn't matter if you're making a profit or not. I.e. When they shutdown the Chrono Trigger 3D Remake

Scoper 05-15-2013 02:47 AM

Bomber games was also send a C&D for remaking Streets of Rage, and had to shut down.

Also, are you actually serious because it's hard to tell.
All content you submit (allegedly) becomes property of graalonline. Additionally, since graalonline would be hosting your server and using it to turn a profit, franchises..no

Then again, quite a few servers blatantly advertise and use copyrighted content, so..do whatchaa wanna?

TSAdmin 05-15-2013 05:45 AM

What Scoper said, but to put it even more simply:

As the developer of the server, you don't make profit. True enough. But you have paid a registered company to rent said server, therefore you are responsible for keeping the content you make on the server you're renting through the registered businesses services within copyright.

Now this is what I don't understand.

Yes, they own the server itself you rent for, but why is it that there's so many of these servers? We could truthfully have a better standard of quality if we designed servers as a unified group and not a bunch of miniature groups. We ***** and whine over a lack of content to play and yet we'll see a small group suddenly create something spectacular and then disappear, when we know that if we had more people in a project like that, it would've been up and running. (If it's not obvious, I'm referring to Atlantis in this case)

It makes absolutely no sense to me for business.

There is no logic in Graal's model, which is why it was dying. All it took was a little common sense in the iMarket (F2P w/ cash cosmetics) and now it's more popular than it's ever been before.

Graal had a server like that.

It was Zone.

It had some life when they added the copyright stuff.

Just make it based on Zelda... ?
Crap on a stick, we've been using stolen images since 1999.
My whole life as a level designer was a sham. None of us on Graal would have even made the cut as a level designer to use these tiles for Nintendo anyhow. Their very first original attempts at using these tiles make all subsequent attempts (on Graal) look pretty bad.

0:01 - 0:35 is what I thought of reading this.

Animal Crossing shares some of the same ideas as Graal2001 without actually being connected. This could be elaborated on very well.

Can Graal2001 come back out yet?

it was actually a lot more fun then.

Animal Crossing honestly would be the best franchise to model a server after. I noticed while playing AC that there were many of the same elements and items contained in that game that were also found in Graal2001 (hats, shovels, apple farming, fishing, trading between players, online competition, scheduled events and NPCs, player houses, the list goes on really).

It seems like a recent update to Graal made a few things on Graal2001 stop working, but the majority of the server still works. I do need people to help test the events (can't do that with one player) and see what works and what doesn't, and then people to script whatever might be needed. The train still works and most of everything I have tried that can be done with one player.

I think there are some people who believe that the whole server needs to be re-scripted. But it is my opinion that nothing will feel the same if that were to happen, so I believe it should not happen. I think that Graal should rather update its support for Gscript1 to work right.

fowlplay4 06-16-2013 04:25 AM

iClassic

[x] hats
[x] shovels
[/] gralat farming
[/] fishing (planned)
[/] trading between players (planned)
[x] online competition (spar leaderboards, etc)
[/] scheduled events (currently just a GST every season)
[x] player houses and tons of furniture
[x] npcs and rp areas
[x] 1000+ playercount

Kamaeru 06-17-2013 12:55 AM

Yeah, it doesn't have the sort of pacing or charisma though.
Plus, I think that a platform with no buttons as the control method is a total letdown for me as a hardcore gamer that would probably put thousands of hours into the game if it were on a better suited platform. Instead iClassic, with its thousand playercount that every one of us have dreamed of seeing on a Graal server, does not appeal to me at all..
