Learning Lat

I wanna learn how to LAT (As the previous thread was) , I've read over the stickies etc .. Those just don't seem to help me at all.

But inspired by puppin I just wanna learn basic basic BASICS (like from scratch newbie)

I'd rather you PM me with steps or what to start off with , how to start off.
Thank you ^^

Crono 02-26-2012 02:34 AM

Start off by opening level editor and goofing around with it.

This may sound really dumb, but it does actually help. Just mess around with it and challenge yourself to make new and better things.

This is how I learned:

opened the editor, tried to create a small overworld >
logged into various servers as I played and examined various styles >
opened the editor, tried to create a small overworld based on what I had seen >
logged into the forums and examined work done by Crono, Wan, Madmartigan,
BARGAD, and Spanky
opened the editor, tried to create a small overworld based on what I had seen >
posted what I had learned on the forums for critique, massed screenshots >
opened the editor, tried to create a small overworld based on what I had been told >
repost levels a few times, learn >
was now a great LAT

If it makes you feel any better you're probably one of the most annoying ones, up there with Rave_J.

Aw, fowlplay4 keeping his image up with the usual snark commentary.
It's adorable.

I find building a level and posting it on the forums for opinions is the best way as long as you get constructive criticism from legit people like maximus/crono/etc.
Rinse and repeat, but try not to spam the forums and show people that you're actually trying to get better. If you don't, people soon become frustrated and give up on you.
Good luck :)

Which remake was it? (Who was leading it?)

I've been leveling for hours and hours on , woke up leveling.

I can't post any of my work or what I'm working on because I always end up changing it around completely , But I do need help on this

Lighting:
How can I get the lights to be DIM in the RGB Alpha ?

Water:
I want to use a darker water tile , or overall dim the level. How can I do that?

NPC:
How can I make a normal NPC just stand there and only speaks when you come up to him (Like most NPCs on every server).

Besides that I'm still working on Linking I kinda go it down to getting to the other level but then where I warp seems to be quite random .

Change the last value to something lower. For example instead of 0.99 try 0.30.

There's 3 different water shades. Light blue is walkable, blue is swimmable, and darkblue is blocking. The way I dim levels is just to use "seteffect 0,0,0,0.99" where you change 0.99 depending on how dark you want it. The lower the value the less dark the level will be.

The scripting language on the Level Editor is outdated compared to the one used online but for the sake of practice, try something like...
NPC Code:

if (playertouchesme) {message HI!!;}

To get more accurate coordinates click play and go to where you want the player to show up in the level and press f5. This will bring up a box that has the level name and the x,y coordinates you are currently occupying.

Also, Paths can characterize your level a lot. Not all paths are straight, erosion happens even in real life. So I'd definitely play around with the tiles. Depending on what your tileset contains and permits you can do wonders of things with paths. Here are a few samples to get your brain flowing. Hope they help.
