Godly Graphics
If you could make tiles like this I would literally WORSHIP you.
By the way, the game is Secret of Mana 3. It's a great game. Tiles are INCREDIBLE though. |
And old news is old.

Over 9000 tiles, that is not even possible!

Tiles are incredible, and many pixel artists aspire to them. Too many.

While we are on the topic of SOM, I just found out they ported it to the iPhone recently. :D

Very true, and what Dusty wants to say with that, is that too many see these old games as like, absolute level of pixelart...or games...which is sad...i could go more into detail expressing what I mean with that, but meh, I'm not even sure if you guys understood |

What I mean is that SD3 has such amazing pixel art that EVERY aspiring pixel artists decides to try to make their first RPG tileset just like theirs. So you tend to see A LOT of SD3-like tiles out there, and you see it so much that it kills the value.

I would consider Final Fantasy III / VI tileset godly before this game.

I still like Chrono Trigger the best of the SNES RPGs. The worldmap tileset is unmatched and the outside tiles look nice. SoM 2 is good looking as well but I've never played it so haven't really seen much. Screenshots look promising though...
FF3/6 has a pretty ugly tileset. |
SoM is better in my mind, but FF6 did have some amazing pixel work. It worked well with the story.
I always thought the floating island was really awesome. http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/1...tasycharac.jpg By the way, when are we getting background images? HUH? |
Suikoden II !

FF6 was one of the better looking games on the SNES, but I don't think it compares very well to SD3. SD3 did everything right. Great settings, awesome tiles and no apparent grid at all, fluent and amazing sprites and animations, and a lot of variety. FF6 had some great tiles(the cliffs especially) but the animation was stiff and primitive, and some things didn't tile so well(like floor patterns and stuff). Still a great looking game.

Clocktower had some pretty good graphics.

Is any of this applicable to Graal or are you just babbling about the ~evolution of a pixel artist~
I mean there is a lot of places for Graal tiles to go before you bother getting as detailed as real SNES games, like just looking at colors and **** |
