New to Era tileset. (Need criticism)

1 Attachment(s)
Hi. I'm thinking of trying to apply to Era iPhone or Era PC's Level team.

I'm not sure if this is a good level, as this is my first one. I am thinking of taking away the billboard (it looks a little sloppy and unnecessary) put up next to the building, and maybe add another house either to the top left of the level or bottom. So basically, this is what I got so far. I kind of slammed a lot of flowers into the level and almost the same thing for trash (for the iPhone server community because of so many players on picking flowers). I wasn't too confident with the grass detail, because I couldn't find many tiles for grass detail.

Era iPhone and I think PC spam flowers too, so I wasn't sure if I should of implemented it.

I might also think this building is too small, so I might expand it. I did not learn to use the whole tile set yet either. I will be eventually making the level better, and inserting an indoor level for the building which sounds pretty easy to do.

Here's my picture of the work in progress so far.

(NOTE: I didn't put in some images I thought would of looked good with the level because of it not showing up in my Offline Editor, as most did.)

Criticism is recommended when you post, but don't be too harsh on me. Thanks!

salesman 12-25-2010 08:39 PM

The grass and road tiles should be filled with more than one tile because right now the pattern is way too noticeable. I'm pretty sure the tileset has a 2x2 road pattern, and a 3x3 or 4x4 grass pattern that you should use.

Other than that and the ugly sign, not too bad.

iFuzzy 12-25-2010 09:18 PM

Thanks Mattkan and Salesman! Appreciated it. :).

Crono 12-25-2010 10:46 PM

When making Era levels I learned that you have to completely toss away all "UN" styles you have and start fresh. Detailing like that doesn't work. It looks ugly. Try to be a bit logical.

The road itself, as salesman said, has a pattern you should use.

Looks ok for a first Era level. Keep at it.

Here, I updated my level by a lot in terms of moving the flowers around, removing the sign, and adding a new building. :)

I hope this is better to you. I also modified the streets a little, it's exactly like PC and Era's streets now.

What should be available to detail the roof more on the newer building? I seen most buildings on Era with just a regular roof, sometimes with barrels like I did.

Basically, I'm trying to fit in Era's style.

Here's my final version. Does this look a lot more appealing by look?

Remove 80% of the trash on the road and sidewalk.

Wouldn't it be hard for players to gather the trash then? I could do that if I wanted to apply to Era PC.

EDIT: It look likes Andrew liked my work, and I may be a future staff in the future, so I'm crossing my fingers on this.

On the mean time, i think I may try out to LAT on Era PC. I'm not too confident though.

All trash is spawned on the world by a database script most likely, and not actual scripts placed in the levels.

It's great man, keep up the good work. :)

Ah, I see.. I'l just leave it there for now though.

@Regret, thanks.

Unkownsoldier 12-27-2010 01:10 AM

looks good.. but the street looks like crap.

Kamaeru 12-27-2010 02:19 AM

I would like to criticize the Era tileset. I think it should be isometric, like Fourside.
Maybe this suggestion would be more appropriate for a thread on the Era forums? I'm not sure.

Well, that is a sweet idea, to have a nice looking era, but that is simply not going to happen. People need to realize as much as we hate the tileset, it isn't going to change.. Or at least, not to anything this good or drastic..

RegretZ 12-27-2010 03:09 AM

Graal and isometric do NOT go together.
The whole thing was based off of Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Making it isometric is completely screwing with the base of the game. It would be weird as hell.

Graal is somewhat powerful when it comes to customization. If someone were to make it isometric there would be no reason it would be held back by the fact that the default engine is based off of Zelda. Hell, you're saying this in the forum of a server about gangs and guns.

However, it would be a challenge since Graal is coded to handle square tiles, not isometric. A few people have attempted an isometric engine, but it's a lot of work. However, if it WERE accomplished, it wouldn't be weird at all if someone scripted the movement well enough.

For era though? Isometric would make it feel weird.

Well it is my first level, so don't be too mean.

Instead of saying "It's crap", you could help the community or just me by explaining how it looks like "crap". How should I change it, etc.

But you said Graal.

Drastically changing the style(isometric isn't just a style, it also effects gameplay) on something already existing with a playerbase is of course going to feel different. You're changing something people are familiar with. But Graal itself is not just one game.

However, different != bad.

Yes It was necessary in my opinion, as I don't post ALWAYS random comments. This was actually my first "off-topic" related comment since I actually thought it was "necessary" in my opinion because of it being funny. :D

BTW Thanks for the comments Andrew!

BTW 2: I think I have competition now.. >.> Gwfcctennis

Gwfcctennis, go on Era PC and download the Era Dev kit.

No, and I am not being mean. look at the quote below, one of the first forum posts stated that the road pattern is 2x2. You seemed to have fixed the grass, but not the road. So I can say it looks like crap because people told you how to fix it, you just ignored his advice in the aspect of fixing the street.

I'm not sure if I'm actually retarded of thinking about what you mean with the 2x2 road pattern, but I tried to solve that issue. It probably didn't help much, but this might be my FINAL - FINAL version :P.

I see Era PC's road like what I did, so I'm still confused what pattern you mean.

Heres the new - re-edited level:

Changes:
-Added more grass details (a few twigs and rocks)
-Redone some of the dirt/sand details
-Moved a few trees & flowers around to different locations (I didn't add/remove any)
-Changed the tileset's season to Autumn (Fall). I don't know why I changed the season, I just think Autumn is more awesome.
-Added some tea cups to the tables
-Added a bench next to the sand detail which is located on my 2nd picture to the bottom building on the left of it. (Might be there just for decoration or so, not sure if I should just remove it..)

I'm still concerned and looking into the crappy street pattern..

Ah! I was looking for those tiles, I'm actually being serious, i thought i had a different tileset version or something so i let that go..

I'l keep looking for it.

EDIT: FOUND SOLUTION (Hehehehe, your all WRONG who ever talked about the street)

In the OFFICIAL Era Dev. Kit, you get THREE tilesets (winter, fall, summer). I'm using Fall's tileset at the moment.
Attachment 52113

Look at the red area. I compared it to the Winter tileset which is in Era PC right now. Era PC's Winter tileset has different tiles for the streets and sidewalks.

BTW: You did get me there with the weird street tile error, i fixed it.

I like the use of the dirt tiles to help detail, fits in with the fall theme nicely.

Yay! With all of these positive comments, I could also try out for Classic iPhone if iEra is closed on positions at the moment.

Thanks Crono

Yeah, you could go stand outside the battle arena and say, "HELPING PLAYERS!"
Kidding, I'm sure you'll succeed wherever you choose. ;)

Well, it's not too easy to get in contact with Xor, plus he's pretty strict when you get to talk to him. He's probably the most toughest Manager out there so it actually could be a problem. I'l try though and make a brief essay of why I applied, etc.
