FPS Lag on Era

Constantly while playing Era my FPS drops over and over. This makes it extremely hard for me to pk on era. It's very frustrating trying to dodge bullets and shoot while your opponent is running almost twice as fast as you, even though you both have the same walk speed. I highly appreciate anyone who helps me. <3

All of my drivers are completely updated.

That's pretty intense. I once optimized that when I was still working on Era. Looks like it got a few additions..

Supaman771 12-05-2010 04:29 PM

Open task manager and go to processes.
See if anything is taking up an insane amount of cpu usage.

Close programs like AIM/MSN/Limewire if you're not constantly using them.

Also (which you probably did) turn off the effects in the Graal options menu, or even the gani effects in the Era options menu.

do you have the same problem on v5?
I'll take a look at the movement system. It's usually pretty high, but 14% is nuts...especially when it's the only thing showing noticeably high cpu usage.

I noticed someone added ice parts to it, no additions from me though

Chris told me to post "The majority of that is actually the nickname system since it's called from within the movement system, I tested it when I was manager trying to reduce the CPU usage". Sorry if I'm breaking rules or something, just trying to help someone with their lag problems.

Yep those are all closed.

Yep, same problem on v5.

salesman 12-05-2010 10:23 PM

In response to what Chris said, you should see if limiting or even disabling nicknames helps

WillaWonka 12-05-2010 10:37 PM

Yes, disabling nicknames helps a boat load. When I had v5 i had to check no nicknames to have less lag, virtually none, but v6 solved all the problems for me.

Tell Chris that now he's 'double banned no returns white rabbit'.

DustyPorViva 12-05-2010 11:00 PM

If default nicks were more customizable we wouldn't have this problem.

Crow 12-05-2010 11:11 PM

That is strange. I had the nicknames working quite well and with a low CPU usage when I was around. The code was still somewhat ****ty, and I believe Chris optimized it or something, but the usage used to be way, way lower.

Dnegel 12-05-2010 11:43 PM

Tell Chris to come back!

jkldogg 12-06-2010 12:21 AM

So turning off nicknames should help lag?

or buying a better computer

the real problem era has to solve (which duznt concern poor jkl only) is the lag that every european player has
ive never seen anyone in europe under 100ms and i never go lower than 140ms (getting better internet is not an option since i already have the best on the market), plus when other people r using internet i go up to insane lag, even 500-600ms

There is no solution. There is a reason most MMO's host different servers for different continents -- it's the only way to give every localization a decent experience.

The Lag problem, from my experience because awhile back I had to play with a window the size of a hand and nicknames and all affects off to keep my lag under 200fps, but was always above 100fps...

But now since i got the V6, I have it in fullscreen, all affects and nicknames on and i average 59m/s. Thats the solution, and if lag is affecting you in v6, revert back to v5 if that when you didnt have problems, not rocket science.

Stefan lives in europe i dont know why lag there is atrocious, maybe they need better computers...

Australia is far away on a "island" per-say, and there is just about nothing in australia, so either move away from australia or shoot kangaroos as a holdup to get the government to use better internet... idk.

Better computers will not solve lag problems, and not everyone who lives in Europe lag, far from it.

The Era main server is located in Texas if my knowledge serves correctly.

And Aussies own you, Gtfo.

better computers r u retarded?? it's europe not africa *******, i can assure u that we have identical computers as u do and my computer is new
plus computer affects fps lag (my fps is always 20-21)

bloodykiller 12-06-2010 11:36 PM

oh and v6 duznt solve anything
i dnt use it cuz it's full of glitches and it's hard to read masses etc

I went ahead and optimized the movement system a little bit more. Basically I just removed a lot of redundant function calls and calculations. Some things were being recalculated 50+ times every frame, but now they're only calculated once.

You probably won't notice a big difference (if at all) because, as Chris said, most of the slowdown is due to redrawing nicknames every .05 seconds.

Hey dude, don't downplay that. You're the guy who gave Era the right to vote. Combined with this change that you admit yourself is worthless, I don't see how anyone could feel justified criticizing you.

I was just following up because I said I'd look into it:

Everything runs fine for me with or without nicknames, but turning them off drops the CPU usage from 4-5% to about 1% (testing at unstick me where usually a lot of nicknames are drawn).

I really don't know how else to help you, but you might want to check out this thread which applies to dual-core processing. Basically,
Quote:

open task manager and set Graal's process affinity to only one CPU (right click the process, click "Set Affinity..." and check only one CPU)
Some people have said it helped them, but others said it didn't make a difference. Good luck!
