Swamp Water

I'm working on a server, just kinda on the side for something to do and I've come up with a concept for a swamp town:

But am having trouble even starting with doing the swamp water.

Also, better worse?

The bridge/dock whatever you want to call it is just a sketch, still working on it.

Is it too busy? Should I switch to something simpler?

Demisis_P2P 08-25-2010 11:52 AM

Yeah it's too busy.
Maybe try just toning down the contrast a bit though?

Soala 08-25-2010 01:47 PM

It needs a way more simple texture and less contrast, try some clear green water tones and then add in what should be in the depths, to give it more of a swamp water texture, but try to keep it really simple.

Look at actual swamp water. It's stagnant. What you have right now looks like radioactive waste. I would introduce some browns, as well.

Dnegel 08-25-2010 10:22 PM

Have you played Heroes 3 before?

Check out the "fortress", it got a pretty sweet swamp theme (the huts reminded me alittle bit about it actually). :D

smirt362 08-26-2010 02:30 AM

K, will do.

Agreed.

Deas_Voice 08-26-2010 08:26 PM

hey, nice sketch!

for the swap water, i would add some swamp plants and some darker contrast :)
oh and, is the bridge gonna have such small pillars to hold it up?

It looks like leaves yes, but it's also pretty sweet. ^^

Am I getting there?

Maybe some color tweaking is in order, but is the pattern good?

Soala 08-27-2010 11:37 AM

The last one has too much contrast for my taste. Both first and second one are great :)

nullify 08-27-2010 02:28 PM

Diggin' the first one, but the hue could be tweaked a bit.

Dnegel 08-27-2010 04:18 PM

It's better now, but try giving it a more grayish green.

Dumdumdidi 08-27-2010 05:31 PM

try to make it darker without sacrificing the contrast.
that colour makes it look like sewage.

Hue has to do with the color, not shading. And the color is fine. :p

Crisp emerald green water is not what I think of when I imagine a swamp

Yeah, swamp water is green and alittle bit brown with a foggy feeling added to it.

I think the color looks like nuclear waste. Therefore the hue could be tweaked a bit.

Kinda like that yes.

Just take water, mix it with some soap, a turd and a old mans pubic hair and you got it ready.

Me as well.

Fulg0reSama 08-28-2010 05:49 AM

I like the last one too.

Draenin 08-28-2010 07:34 AM

At this point, color and shading are the only issues, so I'd say it's good to go. The color doesn't really matter as long as it's subtle and it compliments the rest of the objects you plan to put in your world.

Clockwork 08-28-2010 11:08 AM

It looks like the ivy you can climb in OoT.... o.o

Pond water is still and stagnant... Though I guess it could be covered in plants in some area's, it would just bend in with grass and create a super green level o.o

I r made example of how my opinion of swamp water looks.

This is the color I think he should be using

smirt362 09-05-2010 08:30 AM

Still working on it, haven't had a chance for awhile.

Swamp transitions

Should I go more towards clockwork's color?

oo_jazz_oo 09-05-2010 08:41 AM

This looks much better than before. :O

But as far as color...i kinda like the blue-ish green you have, but it doesn't really scream "swamp" to me. :P

Maybe something closer to Aeko's example. But looks good. :3

Crow 09-05-2010 08:44 AM

Either more grayish or more greenish. Right now, it's too blueish to be swamp :3
