New ATM Released

We've released the new (rescripted and redesigned) ATM system on Era.

To use it, just go up and grab it. You don't need to use an ATM card (all accounts are automatically given a new bank account on login). The money you had in your ATM prior to the overhaul is still there.

Screenshots:

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/8396/bank1.png http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/844/bank2d.png

Tips:
  • You don't have to click the buttons, you can just type (probably faster)
  • You don't have to use a bank card (you lost it, anyway)
  • Balances automatically load on screens where they're needed
  • When withdrawing, you can press the up key to set the amount as the amount in your bank
  • When depositing, you can press the up key to set the amount as the amount you have on you

A huge thanks for Rufus and Dusty for the original layout/design of the new ATM.

If you notice any bugs, please remember to report them.

DustyPorViva 11-12-2009 05:08 AM

Wow, I didn't think that was going to be used, rofl.

bout time.

i like how the buttons press down even when you use the keyboard

Even though you've added this, I really don't know why you didn't use the images [1] [2] that added variation and style. I thought the ATM image was the best part of what I originally posted, and I still do. On the other hand, I kind of like what the screen has turned into, and hopefully this will just be the start of adding specific interfaces as opposed to the general ones.

A few things:
  • I liked having a bank even if it's just filler, though it doesn't have to be as there are many functions to a bank. It is something you will find absolutely everywhere in a modern setting.
  • I also liked the bank cards because, although again it is kind of filler content, it added realism to the server in a way that isn't intrusive. I forget my bank card all of the time in real life and end up having to go home for it because I've got no money, it has importance and a relationship with ATMs. I'm sure people can relate to that.
  • The interface needs appropriate sounds to make it feel more engaging. Something for when it starts up, beeping when pressing buttons, alert sound when you've made an error or are pressing buttons that do nothing, etc.
  • I think background image would look better without Era Bank" in the corner. We already know where it's from because of the the title.
  • The error messages like "You don't have enough money on you!" should be on the ATM, not appearing in the corner of the screen when everything else is on the interface itself.

Looks nice. :)

It is awesome! Great work! :D

Those images are pretty ugly imo, and more importantly, they're very odd sizes (39x63, and 39x47 i think?). We cannot use them without having to visit every existing ATM to make sure the new graphic fits. The dimensions should be some multiple of 16 pixels so that they can be placed nicely in a level (preferably 32x48 like the current one).

I had someone remake an ATM to fit the new interface...just uploaded it.

Much better than Era's current.

They are the ATM images which were supposed to fit the interface >_< And they work nicely. I already tried them a couple months ago. Nobody wanted the ATM system redone back then though.

salesman 11-12-2009 09:51 PM

You can't just replace an image that exists in nearly every level on the server with a completely different sized image (without having to go around repositioning it wherever it looks bad)

Like you can see in my post the ATM came in two forms, a wall mount, and a stand alone machine. The reason for this was to add some variation to the server, instead of having the same thing dotted around everywhere. The reason it deviated from the existing Era dimensions was because they were separated styles and look better when bigger. The transition would have been easy with just a little bit more of an effort in replacing the machines, really not that hard.

I think the one Dusty made is much more fitting than the futuristic ATM (circa 2150) you've used instead:

It's a class anyway. I tried it out by replacing the image locally, and it fits nearly everywhere. Just add a setShape() in the class.

Most levels have a little place carved out for the ATM, like so:

Attachment 49830
Orange and blue are the shapes of the ATMs Rufus suggested. We could add a setshape and/or position the images in the class, but I'd imagine in a lot of places, the atm might go off of the level.

It just wouldn't look right everywhere, and is not worth the effort to fix levels individually...it would be easier to redo the graphic.

Like Sales said, it's at weird dimensions, and besides that, it needs a lot of work. I wouldn't be opposed to replacing the current, but not with that image.

The bank hasn't been removed (and will have more purpose, soon!), it was just blocked off temporarily because I had to leave before we were able to replace it with the new bank Tim made (there are still a few changes left to make).

The reason we decided to remove them was because we are now auto-registering all players for bank accounts on their first login since it makes it possible (or way easier) to add money from offline players, and didn't want to "force" people to have ATM cards, though I guess it's not that big of a deal.

This is an excellent idea.

DustyPorViva 11-12-2009 11:23 PM

I think the pressing of the buttons needs to be a little more 'dramatic'.

Also, no store should be selling ****ing broken bottles! W.T.F.

Lol, the broken bottles cant even break.
I could see the irony come.

If you want me to do it (as in, fix up all levels to fit the new ATM graphics), I'll do it. I'd like to see them being used.

As he said, it's also a rather ugly graphic :p (no offense intended to those who made it).

This gets asked so often, it's lost all meaning. Perhaps the ATM was one of the side projects that was so easy that it could be focused on with little to no effort and thus was not intrusive upon current important work being conducted. The GFX were already made for them as well, all that was needed was for it to be compiled so that cuts down dev time spent on it significantly. I mean... it really is a very simple addition and I think it at least says "Hey, we're still here listening to your requests" from the staff. A new ATM GUI has been asked of Era for years.

I don't think this is related to trials; every other trial has had no problems accessing it.

However, there are some glitches with some of the clients that are causing it to not work (including the new Mac one). What kind of computer are you using, and do you have a new version of the Graal client?

It may also have something to do with having a non-US keyboard, though it's worked for people with other keyboards. I'll do some testing later.

Hahaha, what the hell?

Yeah what a meaningless question. God forbid players expect more out of you people than a god damn ATM.

God forbid players expect the unpaid staff team to devote every ounce of their free time to making things they want made, and complain when they do get updates.

I take that back, it was a glitch relating to the "Trial mode - limited choice of look" bar at the top of the screen which caused it to think you were clicking about 40 pixels above where you actually were. It's working fine now.

The reason I stated this was for the reason that it gets asked so often, hearing it over and over again tends really make it not worth asking anymore. I never intended for it to sound like I was referring to the question as totally and utterly meaningless. Although I used the expression loosely, I know it has meaning, just that it never works yet is asked quite often.

My subsequent point after it was that the ATM update was more than simple as the GFX were pre-existing creations of Dusty's, and all that was required was some simple scripting/GUI positioning. Something so simple with all the work there and just to be compiled leads to less than an hour's work, and doesn't really take away very much from the "Important things to focus on".

This is in no way what I was getting at with my statement either, although I do realise that not getting paid makes for lacking development attention.
