What's the last newspaper you ordered in which the style wasn't "predictable?" The squares and "damage" to the newspaper are just visual decorations, so that it's not just a solid silver square with a picture on it. That's what makes the whole GUI look cool to begin with. And your argument about tapping a trillions of times, which takes longer and require more labor? Mining minerals, stocking weapons, and attempting to be more competitive than 1-4 other businesses or writing a short, 100- word entry to a newspaper where everyone has to buy it for 50 dollars from that store or else they're SOL?
and I think it's a little extreme to say "God help the rest of the future businesses" just because a monopolized, simple job isn't being paid.

I entirely agree with you, and I did say that he needs to think of utility in conjunction with creativity. I wouldn't have told him I liked the unpredictable nature of his set up if it didn't work. But from what I'm seeing of it right now, it does. Yes, most newspapers employ a rather generic, boring design set up. That doesn't mean you can't employ a new design that's still got utility but has a unique solution. God forbid we think outside of the box.
I don't really understand what you're saying about the squares/damage. I know they're visual decoration, and I said that. I didn't say they were bad, I said there's just too much going on. I also told him they don't all fit together well. Abstract squares + stains feels more like grabbing at random effects rather than a cohesive design decision. Sure, you can pat him on the back and tell him "That'd make a great GUI." Or you could try to help him find a way to incorporate his design to what his original intentions were: a newspaper.
Your choice, I guess.
For the writing:
Of course, it'd depend on how serious the person was writing it. Sure you could crank out 100 words of **** in a matter of minutes, but if you're taking it seriously you should get paid to do it.
And I hate to tell you, but coming up with ideas for an article, getting screenshots, doing interviews, etc. blah blah blah would take much more work than tapping A.
Mining can be macro'd.
Stocking can be macro'd.
So essentially, that hard work can be perfectly emulated by someone not even at their computer. Try macro'ing an article. Or an interview. See how far it gets you.
Tapping A while you watch television isn't hard work.
As for trying to compete with other business...The only difference in any of them is
prices. AM, GP, or the unstuck me weapon store? Lowest price is all I'd care about. Speedy Pizza, Dippin' Donuts, Dairy Hut...who the **** cares? They all sell the same product, just a different graphic. CTRL+N.
So, in reality, the only thing the owner has to think about is "Should I have a sale, or not?"
That's not much work.
