It's leaving behind residue(I'm assuming from what I read). Typically that's what you erase, the only question is if typical erasers(or even kneaded) would be able to pull it from the paper.

Based on some brief reading I did before purchasing it, no. I figure it's the perfect marker to carry with you - put it in your pocket, never worry about it going dead.

I can understand Elk wanting to purchase this. Best thing to do with said purchase is to be able to hold and write with it before doing so. Cars are 15k plus, we are more-so looking at xboxs and ps3s as a comparison. Which is more justifiable -- spend 300+ all the games for a gaming system you will only use for 2or3 years or have a tool you use all the time and make money using it for a "lifetime"? Plus i'm sure resale value is pretty good on well kept mechanical pencils if you grow out of it.
