Okay, so what am I? I was born in Ohio, but I have lived in South Carolina for as long as I can remember. Am I Southern? Am I Northern? Does it make a damn difference?

Breaking people up into groups just because they were born/live in a different area than you is stupid. That's like insulting someone because of their skin color. Nobody really had a choice in where they were born, or what color skin they have, or how tall they will be. These are things we have no control over. Isolating others because they aren't exactly like you is disgusting. :\

Ok in no way am I racist (i have friends who are white, black, mexican, asian etc.) and I live in Texas but you have you see that the south at that time needed slaves...wether it was morally right or not is the debate. I dont think it was right (i mean owning another human?) but you gotta see that the south was full of Rich People (couldnt work), Poor white people (worked but still couldnt get shizzy) Average White Farmers without slaves who actually made a decent living. Now the last type of person there I listed werent too common. there were either mainly the rich slave owners or the poor white "crackers" as they were refered too (the rich people named them that) only the rich people owned slaves but for the southern economy to survive those slaves were needed.. Notice for at least 20 years after the civil war the southern economy was worse than Ethiopia's now. Only when the industries came in in the 1880's did it start to prosper again it took 20 years for them to recover!

If you can find a race where the majority follow certain personality trends than you have the right to say "I do/don't like ___ people". Otherwise not. It IS bad to say you don't like someone simply because of their skin colour, nationality, race, appearance.

Showing a Confederate flag does not mean you're racist.
It's just a symbol of the southern part of the United States. The Civil War wasn't about slavery until people started making rumours. It was about civil rights. Period.

Unfortunately, the Confederate Flag has been hijacked as a symbol of oppresion. It is most infamously recognized as a symbol of the KKK as a way of stating their belief that the Civil War should be refought and the south should maintain its right to own slaves in a plantation economy. It's unfortunate, it may even be innacurate, but that's the world we live in. The swastika was an indian symbol of luck or prosperity or something prior to its adoption by the National Socialist Party of Germany in the mid 1930s (You all know of what I speak, but the words are censored so I will not say them directly) - now it is in poor taste to continue its use. A more contemporary example, the American Flag has been a symbol of conservativism since the 60s, in defiance of hippies who valued peace over nationalism. It wasn't until September 11th when it returned to the mainstream as a symbol of support for all Americans, not just the nationalists or conservatives.

That's why people are giving you guff for the confederate flag. It's a symbol of the rebels, the south - an army of rich white landowners who were protecting their right to a slave-labor based plantation economy against the rich white factoryowners of the north. The war itself was meaningless, or rather, the battles were - in the end, the war was decided by the relative economies, and Industry won out over Agriculture.

If your point is that Agriculture Rox, fine. If your point is that Southern Culture is gentle and refined, just say so. If your point is not that the southern economic system was and is superior, however, I would not recommend continued use of that particular symbol, any more than I'd promote the use of the USSR flag to say "Russian Culture Rules!"

Back off topic - of course, and the poor of the north supported the war as well, and there were a few slaves on either side fighting under the belief that they would be freed for their efforts, though they weren't treated decently by either side. But as always, it was the rich that declared and directed the war. Just like the American Revolutionary War was a bunch of rich white colonial guys who didn't want to pay their taxes verses a bunch of rich white nationalist guys who didn't want to pay their taxes neither.

Actually, I am learning about the North-South controversies now. The prime cause of the civil war WAS slavery and political beliefs. The southern leaders of the states were Democrats and WERE RICH. They decided to secede. Nearlly 70% of all states excluding Virginia and South Carolina did not want to secede. The political people decided it for them.
