You don't have to be African-American to act that way. There are uneducated, poor people of every race. But even if he was, by commenting on it, everyone would be giving him the attention he wanted, and thus perpetuating the problem.

Just as likely though, that he simply thinks it's cool to talk that way. It's like when guys would go around calling themselves pimps. I mean, what was that all about? I would never date a guy who said that about himself. Pimps are reprehensible, and if you are one, it makes your girlfriend a prostitute. Too many people don't bother to think for themselves and are happy to just follow the herd.
