This has always been my bottleneck on *any* graal project.

I think the direction of G2k1 should be decided by a group of people rather than by one person. Ideas need to be brainstormed, organized, and evaluated.

I'll throw out some things I considered recently:
  • I despise the custom bodies and want the normal ones. They have a great deal more content available for them and are more familiar to just about every graphics artist.
  • It's ridiculous that bomys could only move in one of four directions at a time.
  • I believe it is important to focus on kingdoms, but I don't think it is a good idea to have all five available to players at the beginning as to not dilute players among the kingdoms if there isn't a decent server population. I believe it would be best to start out with 3 kingdoms, then increase to 5 depending on kingdom/server population and demand. I don't know how old G2k1 players would feel about this, so I'm interested in hearing opinions.
Edit:

Meh. The old bodies are kind of crappy and do not really lend themselves to player customisation beyond hats. Not sure how great the custom bodies actually looked, but I could see some room for gimmicky kingdom-specific accessoires. I guess I would make this contingent on what you can do for graphics artists.

Is having playable bomies even worth it? The whole "no hands" thing makes most things really stretching it, and I am not sure if dividing content beween humans and bomies as well as possibly between the kingdoms is really worth it. To what extent did players choose to be a bomy, anyway, and how many of them were involved in kingdoms? Is playable bomies really a thing or can we just make the interesting parts work through pets/npcs/story?

I figure just starting with dustari and santerrain would be sufficient. Even then I would hold off the whole "there is actually a player in charge of the entire kingdom" thing, mostly to avoid competing with GK for retarded power struggles and each new king tearing down all the stuff that happened before him, and also so there is more room for actual staff to flesh out the kingdoms with interesting content. Ideally you get some clever people on board to script out interesting politics and whatnot if people want a proper backdrop for their roleplaying, but just doing the GK thing and handing out ranks and hoping that some cool kingdom dynamics spontaneously evolve is probably not the way to go.

benpoke103 08-04-2010 03:41 AM

Loriel, have you been hiding on IRC buddy? :(

Brad 08-04-2010 03:42 AM

please have playable bomys. Loved racing so much. <3 Only had a human to mine with. :/ Old playable bomy generations allowed us to not get lamed by humans. However, when the new HP system was generated it made bomys terrible. Before then, I could hold my own pking any human.

I am still using the same nick, but not hanging out in the channel anymore since half of it has seen fit to be ****s to us.

Yeah okay but you could probably race if someone just makes ridable bomy pets.

Would it be interesting to have something like humans getting all the cool fighty things, sword, bamboo stick and whatnot, and bomies get some creepy psychic powers that do not require hands? I really have a problem with bomies carrying things.

I'm all for that. A few months ago I started working on a plan for Santerrain to revamp the town and improve it. I wanted to make more use of the space for future player housing or for other needs, and give it a more Japanese look.

I also think that one of the important things for kingdoms is to establish a color scheme for kingdom's flag, uniforms, and anything else related. I want to be able to tell what kingdom a person is a member of just by seeing their outfit, if they choose to wear their kingdom's uniform of course.

I've attached the first image I made to highlight how I wanted to divide the town. I actually added outlines to the levels I still have to show where buildings could go and where the main road and walls divide the town, don't have shots of that stuff.

Edit: I think we should keep playable bomy's but improve them and possibly make it possible to transform into one at will. Despite some of the previous disadvantages of playing as a bomy, I liked that you could do something not possible on other servers.

Edit 2: If not having hands is a significant disadvantage then we either need to come up with another advantage to balance it out or just go with the psychic powers thing.

The normal bodies aren't too limited, if Valikorlia is used as an example. It just takes somebody with a little bit of pixel talent. Custom bodies, as I've experienced, are leagues more difficult to customize. You almost have to provide all customizations yourself, since most players aren't going to want to edit relatively complex graphics. I can see the benefit in have custom bodies, when it comes to providing accessories or other 'addons'. But I don't personally think it's worth it.

I agree with this. Also it is simple enough to edit the default ganis to add a simple extra customization thing like a weapon or something strapped to the back of the player, which is something I'd like.

I think the diversity of the normal bodies outweighs the customization benefits of custom bodies.

kia345 08-06-2010 10:38 PM

Plus, GK's bodies have stupid ganis. If you're going to do extra work, it might as well be on the guaranteed to look nice classic bodies than on the experimental GK ones.

Loriel 08-07-2010 04:34 PM

The GK bodies (and heads for that matter) largely "****" as well. The simple fact of the matter is despite this players are still overwhelmingly playing on classic servers with classic bodies, and, are more concerned with matters of content/customization. Saying something ****s without having a better alternative renders your lazy counterpoint a nonstarter (even in this case where it's otherwise accurate).

I will however concede that it'd be nice to have a viable alternative to the two crapfest body standards we currently have on Graal, so, +rep for my liking of your blunt obviousness.

Geno 08-08-2010 11:36 PM

the bodies that i think konidias made that were on 2k1 like 6 months ago were awesome. they were like up to date customizable bodies yet still very classic looking. use them

If we could do what you can do in single player then I'd easily develope (Also who here thinks LATing would be the easiest job in the world for this position :D)

This man has the right idea, by now the community doesn't really care if you have huge plans to get certain things done, the community just wants to be able to log on once more, i'm unsure how troublesome it would be to do your work with people looking around what levels you would give them to view.

Unfortunately, this isn't even close to possible as much as it pains me to say it.

You really don't want to see the server in the current state is in, I mean. I'm in the process of backing up everything and wiping the server clean, re-uploading content, etc.

benpoke103 08-24-2010 10:38 PM

Here's our current objectives/goals:

-Restoring 2k1 to a currently available backup, currently in progress
-Adding newly developed content since the server has shut down that has been worked on by Rufus, Koni, Dusty etc. at a gradual pace
-Add additional expansion content
-Beta Test / Release

For now, if you wish to lend a helping hand, please let anyone on the GDT know, or anyone who has RC on Bomy Island, providing your skills, some examples of work, etc. Hell Raven and I will ultimately decide if we will take you onboard.

I've also re-opened the server for anyone to log on, and Loriel's old mouseball minigame has been brought back for those who are anxiously awaiting to play Bomy Island once again~

Feel free to drop us any comment, suggestions, etc. on our RCs or here on the forums.

I'll post another update sometime before next week.

last time i logged on the bodies koni made were badass and pretty much done from what i saw. and some new smaller things like bug/frog catching. besides that the entire overworld was basically destroyed.

this is what you should do sir.

New customizable bodies.
Old Levels. (to start but you new levels should develop as the server grows older and it's story builds)
work on releasing new quests, not all the time, just every now and then like birdbird's mining quest that was also like a RP mission cause as he uploaded the levels he made everyone hit the walls with a pickaxe)
New Kingdoms!

keep the economic factor of 2k1 with the hats bomies and market, but integrate lots of Kingdoms and roleplaying and such like back in the day! you want the best hats and bomy but must also maintain a respectable kingdom rank!

that image was old. the bodies i saw months ago were the same basis but more completed bottoms, hats. hats worked like shirts and pants. i know the body system is still on the server just run with it.
