I didn't use an alt code. It's right here on my keyboard along with `and ¦, but I know American keyboards are weird so I dunno how you'd find it.

The English get all of the cool keys! :(
I found it, though. To any fellow Americans having this same problem, alt-0172.

I think I had more than that yesterday. Especially since £ > $. So that's pretty good for someone who gets an income that could barely even be described as meagre.

Take up E-Commercing. A math wiz like you should be able to make big cha-chings pretty easily.

Here's a tip: Don't invest in Enron.

Ah, but I don't know the first thing about financial stuff. I could never predict the market with my limited knowledge.

If I really wanted to make some cash, I'd go program for someone. But it's all so much work :(

konidias 04-28-2002 11:36 AM

haha, I remember when I used to rip alladvantage.com and made a good bit of money from running their ad program with a fakesurfer and leaving it running all night.

Tons of others did it too, that's probably why they went out of business and sold their domain to some hosting company.

That's what they get for making such a stupid thing thinking no one was going to cheat it. No matter how much they tried to detect the fakebrowsing programs, they couldn't keep up with the fakesurf technology. I play neopets.com, they seem to be profiting greatly, from the deals they have with disney, and other big corporations.. they have a big office with full staff and have even been releasing merchandise.

I wish we could see Graal like that one day.. All their staff are over 18, and they are all paid, and they have updates EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. Yet neopets.com has been free ever since it was made. They make all of their money solely from advertising.. what is that telling you?

Kaimetsu 04-28-2002 11:38 AM

It's a different paradigm though, Koni. For it to work with us, we'd need to have places all over Graal saying "Hey, sign up with this company for 100 gralats!" and it'd mess up the gameplay. It doesn't really work when there's a social aspect to the gaming. Neopets is pretty much single-player.

mmmmkay: I usually don't have large amounts of money at one time because I spend it ;\

True, I feel the main reason though, is that they are based in France. Neopets for example, is based in California, so they can easily make deals with local businesses, or US businesses. However, Cyberjoueurs is based in France, therefore it's kind of hard for them to contact American businesses for advertising.

They could put small ads on the site, and ads in the non-paying accounts somehow (maybe back in the pm windows). They just can't get good advertising (from actually talking with companies) because of where they are located. Neopets is far from single player.. there is a battledome, and chats, and if you want to do anything, you have to interact with other people. (buying from users shops, trading items with users, using the auctions, etc)

There is a whole top right corner for the forums where an ad banner could go. They could probably set it up so that the ad only shows up for guests even. I know Stefan has said before that they couldn't make good money off of ad banners, but that's because they were just using silly ad rotator companies that paid them measily amounts of money per every click on an ad. Heck, what about having a new g server that has ads in the game or something?

I dunno, there's plenty of ways to make money from advertising. Obviously if neopets is able to buy all that stuff, pay staff, have merchandise, etc, then advertising can't be that measily.

Well, the only reason Neopets players click 'em is because they get paid to do so in Neopoints.

I've played it for a few months, yet I've never gained a friend from it or whatever. The names at the top of shop windows might as well not be there, because you don't care who you're buying from/selling to. There's no sense of community.

They probably don't have to pay as much for servers, either. Communicating via a website is far less bandwidth-intensive than a constant-connection game.

Yes, it is.

Back on topic, I personally don't agree with the current price(s) of upgrading.
I acknowledge that it takes money to run a server, and to host about 20 others. But $39 for a year works out to be about $60 for me. (Canadian)
In comparison to Ultima Online, and other online games that cost money on a monthly basis, yes, it is a lot less, and you get more time for your money. But, as was previously stated, those other games typically keep you entertained for longer than Graal does.
Perhaps when the May implementations come around, Graal will have more of an appeal, and therefore will be worth the money, but for now, I stick to my opinion that it is a large sum for what is offered.
