Also, would you think a smooth transition as opposed to the more noisy one I have would look better?

Smoother would be better.

It's like the ohio river was hit by the BP.

Smoother, but I like the colors used in this one.

Maybe a bit lighter, like LttP tiles.

Dithering is definitely bad for something like water. Reserve it for rough surfaces like rocks and logs :)

yes it is. That trunk has too many "legs" in my opinion, but looks kinda cool.

that's a pretty common look for trees in a swamp
