About stolen graphics and scripts?

I'll talk about scripts.

I care because I worked very hard on some of those scripts for Utopia, and they are using them without my permission. The same thing goes for graphics; I just did not make any.

Please stop being so ignorant, it's starting to get annoying. It would be great if you could stop calling other servers 'era copies'. Anything with a modern tileset, people say 'era clone', no matter what the server will be like.

Utopia's been around nearly as long as Era; Era actually stole some ideas and graphic designs from Utopia.

They are Era clones. Why must every modern server thrive are gangs, shoot-outs, player run gun business, and oddly similar graphics? Do something unique. Make the players cops who fight criminal NPCs and preserve the city. A street racing server where you level up your character's driving ability and make a custom car.

There is so much a modern server can do without white kids playing gang vs. Mafia.

Don't judge Utopia until you've seen it. It is MUCH different.

Then hush about you and your salvation of modern servers

Crimson2005 06-10-2008 06:57 PM

In the ghetto, washing non-colourfast synthetics at 60 degrees, could cost you your life.......

I'm not going to show my server, which will hopefully be a surprise, to everyone who doubts it is anything special.

So them using a copy of the script in their server negates your own enjoyment of it? Would this still happen if they had your permission?

If they asked my permission, that would be fine.

Stealing scripts without giving me credit or asking permission is not.

For the record, I would have let them use it.

Being recognized as the writer of the script doesn't seem like a great enough thing to get upset about when you're deprived of it. Besides, there's a simple cure for that: post it in the Code Gallery. If credit is what you want, there is no better way than making it public.
Requiring people to ask for permission every time they want to use a script seems kind of unmotivated though, unless one is a megalomaniac.

Also, the people at Graal Ghetto might be more cooperative if you stop calling them thieves. It's hardly an accurate term anyway.

DustyPorViva 06-11-2008 12:27 AM

It's not about credit, or making it so people won't steal it... it's the simple fact they did. He should not have to put his scripts up in the code gallery so people won't have to steal it. If it's stolen, it's wrong, it's as simple as that.

Possibly rude, but "morally wrong" seems a bit much. I've never seen any player made Graal material being licensed for a fee, so I'm going to assume there's no financial loss.
Please enlighten me as to how this form of piracy may be harmful to the original author. I'm assuming it's bad in at least some way since it would be silly to label it "wrong" if it wasn't.

DustyPorViva 06-11-2008 01:13 AM

It's against Graal rules, therefore wrong. It doesn't matter how it harms the author, because it's wrong. If I don't give permission to someone to use my stuff, then I don't want to see them using it.

But... I'll comment on your 'harmful' bit. It's harmful because Graal development is a very competitive field. People may not agree with it being competitive, but it is. Everyone wants to make a better server than the next. With servers like Utopia and Graal Ghetto... which have very similar builds, stealing makes it easier for the other server to get the upper hand. If they want to copy, then fine, no one can stop them and if they're putting in the effort then I won't object.

I can go on, but really, until you're a developer(are you?), and you put hard work into your work, you won't really understand what's so wrong with someone stealing your work.
