A brief history of Christmas:
Long ago, some people with the most decent of intentions decided that the pagans needed to be converted or suffer the infernal tortures of Hell's grim tyrant. To that end, they co-opted the pagan holiday of Yule, celebrates on the Winter Solstice (December 21-23). This holiday celebrated the rebirth of the God, represented by sunlight growing longer from every day onward. Not knowing accuratly the actual date of the birth of their supposed Savior, these decently intentioned men decided that December would be close enough. They told the pagans to squint their eyes just so and see a miracle baby instead of Hyperion incarnate.
Christmas itself as a holiday, including all the trappings of Saint Nicholas and the picturesque ideals of a white Christmas, came into exsistance largely thanks to a vogue started by department stores in the early 20th century.
