Methril 07-31-2005 02:34 AM

syltburk 07-31-2005 08:24 AM

Shadowless, mmmmkay, Birdbird, Gori and Ducati really really inspired and impressed me.

All very unique styles

Edit: Paradox too, me and him started leveling roughly the same time as each other. Looking back at old threads, he had some amazing levels.

How can their be a perfect level a 10/10 ?? it's impossible because you have to apply such thought into your level so you get friggen everbodies likes. and most people if they would see a '10/10' level would get jelous and rate its a 8 or something.

There has been no real rating system set out for levels, but if their was then a 10/10 would be accomplished. and by golly Zurk, that level is a 10/10 if the ratings where the other way around. a 10 was crap and a 0 was Hot. <3

Old Bravo levels, Gori and Menion inspired me.

I never really had a huge inspiration. Wan helped me a lot with putting cliffs together and some of my detailing is kind of like his. I.e when I get lazy I just bunch a bunch of grass tiles together.

Fine, 10/10 out of the normal graal tileset isn't a hard thing to do. But if Graals "levels" were to be put on a scale with other 2d games, graal would have a .05/10 level. Tiles don't make a "level". Graphics make a level. Only the person who designed those graphics can define what a "10/10" level is. Unless a tileset is used as intended, that level will look messy and unnatural. People should not look for originality in a tileset, they should look for originality in new graphics meant for new things. In the 2d world, "level designers" purely do not exist and are meaningless. NPCs and Graphics make up a level. Thats it.

Then again I don't think I should say something that makes so much sense in a level design forum...

Obviously it exists on Graal and should have existed on Zelda : Link to the past. Why? Because their levels look crappy. I don't care if tiles are intended to be used one way or another, the way they're intended to be used could be ugly and the way they're not intended to be used could be wonderful.

The graphics don't mean squat if the person making a level dont know how to use them. You know what? It is terribly simple to make levels, but it isn't so simple to make a level that stands out among all others, no matter what the graphics are.

I do think that a really good tileset can make a huge difference in the appearance of a level, but making levels isn't everybodies thing (meaning not everyone can do them really well, with a really good eye for detail, and a good imagination).

I really don't know why you say that level designers do not exist and are meaningless...I mean the graphics and the npc's are nothing without a level to put them on, and if it is a crappy level, then the graphics and npc's have not been used to their full potential.

I very much agree, there is nothing wrong with experimenting with tiles, using them in places they weren't intended...someone with a really good eye, and a good imagination could make a really good level doing so, and I have seen lots of really good levels doing so...
