That's not wrong. It's the only way to do it with the tileset.

if they were talking about how the tiles themselves connect, then there would be a LOT more to complain about than just the trees

there are tons of tiles in the classic tileset that do not fit together right

Well..that IS a tile error...but it's pretty slight..not really too important. it's almost like which of the two shadows you use on backside cliffs.
