It might just be because the whole overworld is treated like one big level, meaning that the client has to load all NPCs and players on the overworld as long as you're on the overworld.

my point exactly...why id rather have 1 crappy big looking level than 6 huge good looking levels making me really slow

Maybe it's because you get your cable from a crappy ISP? I get cable from the lowest rated ISP in America, and I don't lag at all. I used to when 2k2 first came out, but now I never get lag. I see others running around lagging, but I personally don't get it all. But then again, I shouldn't with a cable modem, 2 GHZ, 512 MB RAM, 64 MB GeForce2 Ti 500...Should I?

Because, if you are, I'll repeat what I've said about a million times:

When using WindowsXP, run graal in compatability mode for Windows98.

I have Windows XP Pro and don't run in compatibility mode, I never lag either.

I lag whenever I play 2k2 and if I play 2k1 for an hour I start to lag hardcore.

Go to your graal directory, and right click on the graal.exe file.
Go to Propeties, and then to the 'compatability' tab.
Check the checkbox that says "Run this program in compatability mode for", then select "Windows 98 / Windows ME" from the drop-down menu.
Click ok, and you're done!

:)

I may be imagining things, but that seems to make it move slower....

All NPCs are percieved at any time? ...

Hum, I think that if Stefan fixed it so that only NPCs within so many tiles will load that a lot of lag would be fixed... Although, this would be a lot of tiles, so you wouldn't have to worry about NPCs not showing up at the edges of the screen.

I just tried it and it made me go slower, too.

That is how it works now. Only NPCs in the levels that touch the level you are in load.

Turn off your firewall... I had to :D

Wanna hear my analogy of how it works? TOO BAD!

Take a bowl of jello. You want to get it into the empty bowl! That's data moving from Stefan's place to yours! BUT, with a fire wall, you gotta funnel it through a... well... funnel! hehe... so basically it's likemoving finger jello thru a funnel. not fast. and not fun.

Not a bad analogy...although Stefan probably has duel T3's and depending on your connection, the funnel size changes....can't forget that ;).
