The thing is that if you want to get a server space
you must convince me/us/the Graal community to
put it up. If you do your own game project then that will
not be a problem (because you own it ;-) but you cannot
use the already existing work put in Graal and
cannot let someone professionaly do they work.
You will need to spend tons of hours working on
the game engine, network code, server, npc stuff,
possibly organize some money, running and protecting
the server etc. I have never really got time to
work on the content, it was more about
'nice idea I will add it if doesn't take much time'.
For newworld we are doing it different, hopefully
it turns out good. For you it is probably different:
you can concentrate on the content

New World seems promissing, but is there a definet release date yet?

well from things I have made, making an offline game engine is easy (at lest for me)...

just the online junk is more confusing because you have to orginize everything and send a ton of data through the server...

and files and stuff, it just gets all hectic...

It's about the little things
For a game like Graal (offline mode only)
you would need to code:
- reading images (gifs, pngs, mngs)
- drawing images (DirectX)
- drawing light effects
- switching between fullscreen/window mode
- playing sound and music
- joystick support
- sharing of images for different objects
- level files + level editor + level generator
- animation files + editor
- npc script parsing
- script commands
- script debugger
- configuration panels
The basic Graal offline stuff has been made
on one single day, so you can imagine that
it could possible be done in a few months
if good programmers work on it.

For online mode:
- server which stores accounts, sends it to the
player at login, saves it all few minutes, sends
data between players
- client-side network code
- special player interaction stuff like
PMs, chatting, profiles, guilds
- data compression and encryption
- automatically downloading updated levels
and graphics
- npcserver which controls dynamic obects in the
game
- tools for administration
- website tools for account creation
- configuring the server machine,
which includes making it unhackable
and updating it all few days to prevent future
hacks; also the machine needs to improved
in speed, meaning testing and installing
different libraries and kernels etc.

I forgot the community and money stuff:
you will see that you need to change the
server often because its expensive,
and people are leaving the project or
trying to destroy it or just needed to
be motivated or trying to demotivate you

When did I say you were? I said we were talking about it...

Does this vB has a refresh function so when people
post stuff the page is automatically updated? :-)

You said that I was the programmer, but I haven't yet said I would be. You've only asked me so far - I haven't said yes or no. Better would be:

"He might end up being the programmer"

I have other things that I really need to work on right now.

Soulblade and I have a different style of graphics, it wouldn't work out.

I stink with GFX's, I never really did much Graphics before, I've manily just made Levels and NPC's. I need to know, is Adobe Photoshop LE any good? I never knew I had this, till I looked in this CD book.
That's what I use...as long as you don't mind missing out on a few features you might never use then it's just fine.

Butz 08-29-2001 03:04 AM

LE is okay, but it doesn't have many of the filter options, and it doesn't have a multiple undo feature...(which gets quite annoying) So if I'm ever drawing anything, I just use Neopaint...
